Tommy Burns

Dec. 1958- May 2008
R.I.P.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS The funeral of Tommy Burns will take place on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at St. Mary's Church, Abercromby Street, Calton, Glasgow. The Requiem Mass will begin at 12.15pm.

St. Mary's is a parish which Tommy was extremely close to personally. St. Mary's Church Hall was also the birthplace of Celtic Football Club, when in November 1887, Brother Walfrid along with others discussed the establishment of a football club to feed the poor in the East End of Glasgow.

Unfortunately, due to restrictions on seating at the church, access to the service will be predominantly for family, friends and club representatives and there will only be very limited public access.

Following the Requiem Mass, the funeral cortege will pass by the Main Stand at Celtic Park where supporters will have the opportunity to pay their respects to Tommy Burns

A.I.C.S.C. 10TH ANNUAL CHARITY DINNER

in association with “The Irish Daily Star” and “Topflight Soccer”

It's that time of year again as Celtic supporters in Ireland gather for the Association of Irish Celtic Supporters' Clubs annual charity dinner on Saturday 5th July at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin for what certainly promises to be a special night with Celtic players from past and present joining over 1,000 Irish Celtic supporters for an evening of celebration.

Now an established and not-to-be-missed fixture on the social calendar of Celtic fans in Ireland and beyond, previous years' events have been memorable and colourful occasions with a superb atmosphere. They provide the passionate Irish support with a chance to welcome its beloved club back to the land where the glorious Celtic story began and to thank the players for their efforts this season.

As A.I.C.S.C. chairman, Tom Maher, commented, this year's event, however, marks an extra-special landmark:

"We are very much looking forward to another great night of Celtic celebrations in the Citywest to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the A.I.C.S.C.. We have had a very successful decade representing Celtic supporters in Ireland through some very interesting and rewarding times and can look back with much pride on our achievements. So, we look forward to another gathering of fans from the four corners of Ireland and beyond to celebrate Celtic and its Irish connection."

This years nominated charity will be the Phill O' Donnell Trust Tickets for this event cost €70 for A.I.C.S.C. members or €80 for non-members and can be purchased by forwarding a cheque/draft/postal order made payable to the A.I.C.S.C. to Charity Dinner, PO Box 32, Belfast BT1 1AA.

Irish Famine Mass at Carfin

The annual Irish Famine Mass will once again be celebrated this year at Carfin’s Marian Grotto on Sunday June 1st at 3pm. Numerous priests will concelebrate the occasion at the Lanarkshire grotto's Irish site which contains a Mass Rock, a statue of St Patrick and of course the Famine Cross which was unveiled amidst much controversy by the Irish premier Bertie Ahern in June 2001. The Celtic Charity Fund and many individual Celtic fans were foremost amongst those who contributed financially to this memorial which has deep relevance to many generations of Celtic supporters. A huge turnout is expected and all are welcome to join the celebration.

JOCK STEIN

"There is not a prouder man on god's earth than me at this moment. Winning was important, aye, but it was the way that we have won that has filled me with satisfaction. We did it by playing football. Pure, beautiful, inventive football. There was not a negative thought in our heads. Inter played right into our hands, it's so sad to see such gifted players shackled by a system that restricts their freedom to think and act. Our fans would never accept that sort of sterile approach. Our objective is always to try and win with style. "

A MESSAGE FOR THE SCOTTISH MEDIA

Celtic call on supporters for continued backing.

CELTIC Football Club today called on its supporters to continue their positive backing of the club and get right behind the team on Sunday when Celtic take on Rangers at Celtic Park. Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “I would like to thank our supporters for the continued positive backing which they have given the club during the course of the season.

“Our supporters have given the team tremendous backing home and away domestically and have obviously made Celtic Park one of the most formidable venues in Europe, by generating such a wonderful atmosphere during our Champions League matches this season. “While we know that this match will be another very difficult one, the manager, the team and backroom staff are continuing to fight strongly and I know they are very grateful for the great backing which you the fans continue to give them. Sunday will be another match when we will need your great support.

“While our support at the last Celtic v Rangers match was again incredible, we have received reports of objects being thrown on to the pitch from both sets of supporters. “Clearly this is something which Celtic as a club finds completely unacceptable and we are doing all we can to identify those responsible. We will continue to treat this with great seriousness should it occur again. “The overwhelming majority of supporters continue to back Celtic in a way which we are very proud of - fans who demonstrate time and time again, positive backing for their team. Let's make sure we do this again on Sunday. Thank you once again for your fantastic support.”

Celtic statement on Tommy Burns.

CELTIC Football Club has received numerous messages of support for Tommy Burns and on behalf of Tommy's family, we thank everyone sincerely for these kind thoughts and best wishes.

Tommy is continuing to receive treatment. Clearly, all right-minded people will understand that the club is not in a position to provide updates in terms of Tommy's condition and once again, we would ask that the privacy of Tommy and his family is fully respected at this time.

Under the Press Complaints Commission Code of Practice, the need to respect an individual's privacy with regards to matters of health is clearly stated and we trust that this will now be the case going forward, in relation to Tommy and his family.
